St Hedwig of Silesia Church in Bolków

St Hedwig of Silesia Church in Bolków stands in the upper part of the market square, a few minutes’ walk from Bolków Castle. Its origins reach back to the mid-13th century, while centuries of rebuilding combined an Early Gothic history with later Neo-Gothic elements and valuable furnishings.

Origins beside the market square

The masonry church is dated to 1248–1252, while the first documentary mention comes from 1298. It originally had a Greek-cross plan, a sacristy on the south side and a tower with Early Gothic forms. It was built of red and yellow-greenish sandstone. Later alterations changed the appearance of the church but preserved its medieval roots.

Details, altars and epitaphs

Inside, look for vault bosses showing St Hedwig, her husband and descendants, together with coats of arms of the Świdnica-Jawor-Ziębice Piast line. A fragment of a 14th-century fresco survives above the sacristy entrance, along with Stations of the Cross from 1893 and an organ case dated 1895. Crypts and epitaphs recall former residents of Bolków; the story of about 80 skulls found during the 1927 renovation should be treated as local tradition rather than a settled historical conclusion.
