Town Hall Tower in Strzelin

The town hall tower in Strzelin is the symbol of the town and a story stretched across centuries. The first town hall probably stood here at the beginning of the 14th century, on the site of a merchant house. Rebuilt in the Renaissance style after a fire in 1564, it lost successive versions of the tower in later eras, and the fighting of 1945 completed the destruction.

A ruin that returned to the skyline

The tower blown up in 1945 was dismantled — for decades only a quadrangular base remained. Research and conservation work began in 2004–2005, in 2010 the tower was raised with a polygonal shaft, and in November 2011 a helmet with a dome was mounted. The last chapter was the rebuilding of the whole town hall in 2020–2023: the building opened on 23 September 2023 echoes the form of its sixteenth-century predecessor, and its usable floor area exceeds 3,100 m².

A viewing point and the cellars

Since 2024 the tower has served as a viewing point, and exhibition rooms have been arranged in the town hall cellars. Groups visit with a guide from Monday to Friday after prior telephone booking, individual tourists on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 15:00 and 17:00.

What else to see

Beneath the tower, on the Market Square, lies the granite Judge’s Table from the 15th century, at which town courts were once held before the whole community. Less than two hundred metres away, at Michała Archanioła Street, stands the Romanesque rotunda of St. Gotard — it is worth combining both monuments in one walk through a town that centuries ago rivalled Wrocław for primacy in trade.
