Fortifications
Zamość, Lublin
Zamość Fortress, and in particular its restored Bastion VII with the outwork known as the Nadszaniec (a raised cavalier), is the best place to see how this Renaissance "ideal city" in southeastern Poland was defended. A guided underground route of about half a kilometer leads through musketry galleries and vaulted casemates, and a viewing terrace looks out over the ramparts and the UNESCO-listed Old Town. It is one of the top things to do in Zamość, especially with kids.
The fortifications were built in 1579–1618 for the town's founder, Jan Zamoyski, to a design by the Italian architect Bernardo Morando, and completed by the Venetian engineer Andrea dell'Aqua. With seven bastions, it was among the strongest fortresses of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It held out against Cossack and Tatar forces in 1648 and the Swedes in 1656. It was taken by storm only once, by Polish troops in May 1809, during the Napoleonic wars. A Russian siege in 1813 lasted about ten months, and in 1831 Zamość was the last fortress of the November Uprising to surrender.
After the state bought the town in 1820, the fortress was modernized under Russian rule; the Rotunda gun battery dates from this time. Tsar Alexander II ordered the fortress abolished in 1866. Bastion VII is the only original bastion that survives in full, and it has been restored and opened to visitors.
Plan about an hour for the guided route and exhibition. Tours run only with a guide and need at least three people; guiding is in Polish, and an English-speaking guide can be hired. It is cool underground even in summer.
