Zamość, Lublin
The Zamość Rotunda is a circular 19th-century gun battery that became a German Gestapo prison and execution site during World War II. Today it is the Mausoleum of the Martyrdom of the Zamość Region, a memorial museum surrounded by a vast cemetery of occupation victims. Just a short walk from the Renaissance Old Town of Zamość (say "ZAH-moshch"), it is a quiet, sobering place that explains why this corner of eastern Poland remembers the war so vividly.
The Rotunda was built in 1825–1831, when Zamość was a fortress in the Russian-ruled Kingdom of Poland. It is a ring of brick casemates 54 m (177 ft) across around an inner courtyard 38.5 m wide, with walls about 7 m thick. It originally had 20 cells; one was destroyed by bombing in September 1939.
On June 19, 1940, the Germans set up a Gestapo prison and transit camp here, first for Polish intellectuals and resistance members arrested in the so-called AB-Aktion. In 1942 it became a site of mass executions of people from the Zamość region, including children, during the brutal German resettlement campaign known as Aktion Zamość; bodies were burned in the courtyard. An estimated 50,000 people passed through the Rotunda and between 6,000 and 8,000 were killed here. The camp was closed on July 22, 1944, right after the last executions. The original German inscription marking the Security Police transit camp still survives above the gate.
The memorial museum was established in 1947 and is overseen by the Zamość Museum. A conservation project worth over PLN 8 million, completed in early 2022, waterproofed the structure, refreshed the exhibition and added ramps and tactile models for blind visitors.
