Zamość, Lublin
The Armenian Houses on the Great Market Square in Zamość (say "ZAH-moshch") are the most colorful row of buildings in this UNESCO-listed Renaissance town, and they are home to the Zamość Museum. Built in the 17th century for wealthy Armenian merchants, the houses have richly carved facades, decorative attics and arcades at street level. Inside you can trace the story of the town and its founding family, and in 2026 the museum is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
Armenians settled in Zamość from 1585 under a privilege granted by the town's founder, Chancellor Jan Zamoyski, and quickly became one of its richest merchant groups. Their 17th-century houses stand on the north side of the square, east of the town hall. The facades are covered in reliefs and ornaments; individual houses carry traditional names such as "Under the Angel" and "Under the Married Couple," the latter for the carved heads of a man and a woman. Guidebooks do not agree on which name and color belong to which house, so enjoy the details rather than the labels.
The museum was founded in 1926. Its collections moved into a house on Ormiańska Street in 1942 and survived the German occupation. The houses were thoroughly restored in 1978–1989. Today the museum also runs the Arsenal (fortifications and weapons), an exhibition in the former Zamość Academy, a sculpture gallery, and oversees the Rotunda memorial.
Permanent exhibitions:
For the centenary, the jubilee exhibition "Wpisane w czas" ("Written into Time") opened on June 20, 2026, presenting highlights from all departments, from archaeology to historic photography. Labels are primarily in Polish, so a guide or translation app helps.
Allow 60–90 minutes for the museum. The entrance is on Ormiańska Street, which runs parallel to the square behind the houses. Groups should book ahead.
As of October 2026:
During winter 2026/27 the 10 am–4 pm schedule applies; the museum announces holiday closures on its website.
