Zakopane Style Trail

A town route past more than forty monuments of Zakopane, prepared by the Tatra Museum in 2015, on the centenary of Stanisław Witkiewicz's death. It presents a national style of architecture developed from around 1890 on the basis of the art of Podhale. The visits are best divided into several stages, as the buildings lie in the centre and on the outskirts of the town.

Koliba and the first villas

The beginning is the Koliba villa on Kościeliska Street, built in 1892–1893 to Witkiewicz's design as the first house in the Zakopane style; listed in the monument register in 1983, since 1993 it has housed the Museum of the Zakopane Style. Then come the Oksza villa with its 20th-century art gallery, Atma — the Karol Szymanowski museum, Harenda with the memory of Jan Kasprowicz, and Dom Pod Jedlami.

The old centre and beyond

The route also takes in the Old Cemetery with Witkiewicz's grave, the Tatra Museum building on Krupówki, the Holy Family Church, the Grand Hotel Stamary, the Sabała hotel and the Sacred Heart chapel in Jaszczurówka; the list closes with the shelter above Morskie Oko.

In practice

Some objects are entered with a museum ticket, others are viewed from the outside. Walking is the most convenient way, splitting the route into stretches around Kościeliska, Krupówki and Kozińiec.
