The Reform synagogue at 24 Miodowa Street in Kazimierz is one of the four still active synagogues of Kraków. Built between 1860 and 1862 to a design by Ignacy Hercok, it served from the outset as the main house of prayer for the city's Reform Jewish community.
What sets the Tempel apart from Kazimierz's older synagogues is its decoration: the interior is covered with rich ornamentation in the Moorish style, rare in Polish synagogue architecture. The building survived the city's turbulent history and returned to religious use after the war.
Today the Tempel remains one of Kraków's four active synagogues, although regular services are held here only occasionally. In summer the interior fills with music lovers — it hosts concerts of the Jewish Culture Festival, one of Kraków's most respected musical events.
The synagogue stands in the heart of Kazimierz, a few minutes' walk from Szeroka Street and the Old Synagogue. It is easiest to see during the summer festival, or while exploring the rest of the former Jewish quarter.
