Market Square in Koziegłowy

Koziegłowy, today a small town in the Myszków county, owe their shape to a medieval town charter from the 14th century. Its heart remains the market square, which for most of its history changed neither its building lines nor its function — until 2008 it hosted a market fair, one of the last of its kind in the region.

Foundations beneath the square

In 2011 a revitalisation was carried out, preceded by archaeological research aimed at finding the remains of the former town hall: the outline of its foundations was marked in the new paving with limestone, and selected fragments were raised above the surface of the square. The effect is striking — the town's history is literally written into the cobblestones.

The fountain with goats

In the middle stands a decorative fountain with sculptures of goats, a reference to the town's coat of arms; a pergola and benches were added beside it. The medieval town complex also included a stronghold, of which no traces survive, while a Gothic church of St Mary Magdalene still stands near the square.

In practice

Since the 19th century the frontages have survived almost unchanged — in the post-war decades some plots were rebuilt, but the historic building lines and the small-town scale were preserved. A walk around the square requires no tickets or planning; the place is open at any time of year and day, and a circuit together with a stop at the fountain takes about a quarter of an hour.
