Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Koziegłowy

A few steps from the market square of Koziegłowy, on Kościelna Street, stands the church of St. Mary Magdalene and Corpus Christi — the former parish church of this small Jura town, woven into its medieval urban layout. The masonry building was erected around 1440, although a wooden church stood here earlier and the parish itself dates back to 1402.

Gothic core and a masonry nave

From the original Gothic structure the presbytery survives, along with thick walls braced by massive buttresses. The nave first appeared in the 16th century as a timber structure and was rebuilt in masonry in the 17th century. The church's greatest treasure is a medieval polychrome in the presbytery, discovered only at the end of the 20th century and carefully restored then.

The Kawiecki chapel

In the 18th century Stanisław Kawiecki, royal secretary and starost of Koziegłowy and Siewierz, founded the Baroque family funerary chapel of St. Stanislaus beside the nave. It is Baroque, like most of the furnishing and the square tower, which completes the shingled silhouette.

In practice

The church lies right by the market square, so a visit pairs naturally with a stroll around town; allow about a quarter of an hour for the polychrome interior. Koziegłowy make a convenient stop on the way to the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura, with the castles of Olsztyn and Bobolice and the Jasna Góra monastery within a half-hour drive.
