Town Hall in Szczecinek

At Wolności Square in Szczecinek stands a town hall from 1852 — a storeyed building of red brick on a rectangular plan, an example of eclecticism with a clear predominance of Romanesque Revival forms. It is one of those buildings that define the silhouette of the town: massive brick walls, large distinctive windows and a tower visible from afar.

Architecture

The main façade features a projection (risalit) that turns into an octagonal tower, topped by a four-sided superstructure bearing the date of the town hall's construction. The gable walls of the building and the tower are crowned by a crenellated attic suspended on an arched cornice, and polygonal turrets with lanterns stand in the corners. The roof is hipped and covered with red tiles — the whole composition kept in a uniform brick colour scheme.

Function

Since the mid-nineteenth century the building has been tied to administration — it currently serves as the seat of the municipal authorities, so a visit easily combines the study of architecture with the everyday life of the town.

Worth knowing

The best view of the architectural detail is from the square side: the risalit with the tower, the attic and the corner turrets together form a composition that is hard to mistake for any other building in Szczecinek. The neighbouring townhouses around the square complete the circuit.
