Polesie National Park

Polesie National Park ("poh-LEH-sheh") protects Poland's share of Polesie, the vast, flat land of bogs, fens and lakes that stretches on into Belarus and Ukraine. Set in eastern Poland's Lublin region, it feels far wilder than its size suggests: wooden boardwalks lead across peat bogs that look like a piece of the northern taiga, cranes call over the marshes, and rare European pond turtles nest on sandy banks. For birdwatchers and anyone seeking quiet nature, it is one of the top things to do in eastern Poland.

Where it is and how to get there

The park lies between the towns of Łęczna and Włodawa, with its headquarters in the village of Urszulin. Urszulin is about 55 km (34 miles) northeast of Lublin, roughly an hour's drive; Lublin also has the nearest airport. From Warsaw, allow about three hours by car. Włodawa, on the Bug River border with Belarus, is around 25 km away. Buses are infrequent and trailheads are scattered, so renting a car (or bringing a bike) is the practical choice.

Why it matters

Protecting Polesie was first proposed in 1933, and the park was finally created on May 1, 1990. It covers about 97.6 km² (38 sq mi), with a buffer zone of more than 137 km². It is part of the West Polesie Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO and shared with Belarus and Ukraine since 2012, and it is a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance.

The wildlife is the main draw. Around 200 bird species have been recorded, about 150 of them breeding. The park has Poland's highest density of the elusive Eurasian bittern and the country's third-largest population of the aquatic warbler, one of Europe's rarest songbirds. Its emblem is the common crane. The park also runs a long-term conservation program for the European pond turtle, one of Poland's most endangered reptiles.

Best trails

Most trails combine dirt paths with wooden boardwalks:

• Czahary – a 6.5 km loop from Zastawie across the Bubnów bog, about 2 to 2.5 hours. A favorite for birders.
• Dąb Dominik – from Kolonia Łomnica through woods and alder swamps to Lake Moszne, ringed by a floating peat mat; named after a venerable oak along the way.
• Spławy – a 7.5 km loop from Stare Załucze, 2.5 to 3 hours, on boardwalks and dirt tracks.
• Perehod – 5 km between fishponds, great for waterbirds; cycling allowed.
• Obóz Powstańczy ("Insurgents' Camp") – 4 km from Lipniak, combining nature with the history of the January Uprising of 1863 against Russian rule. Expect narrow boardwalks.
• Cyclists can use the free Mietiułka route (21 km) and the 23 km Urszulin–Perehod eco-trail.

Some boardwalks flood in wet periods, so check the park's notices before you go.

When to go and what to bring

Spring brings crane courtship displays and a chorus of frogs; September and October bring migrating cranes and autumn colors. Summer means mosquitoes in serious numbers, so pack repellent and long sleeves. Bring binoculars, water and snacks, as there are no shops on the trails. In dry spells the park warns of fire risk; call 112 if you see smoke. Signage is mostly in Polish.

With kids

Short boardwalk sections are easy for children. Start at the visitor center in Urszulin, home to the pond turtle conservation center, where young turtles can usually be seen from September to May. Note that the separate museum center in Stare Załucze is closed for renovation until further notice.

• Trails are open from dawn to dusk.
• Tickets for the Czahary, Spławy, Perehod, Dąb Dominik and Obóz Powstańczy trails: one trail 7 PLN (reduced 3.50 PLN); day ticket for all trails 16 PLN (8 PLN); three-day ticket 21 PLN (10.50 PLN). Buy online at poleskipn.eparki.pl.

Is it worth visiting?

If you love birds, wetlands or simply silence, absolutely. It's not a place of dramatic peaks or famous monuments, but a rare chance to walk through an intact European wetland. Combine it with Włodawa's remarkable synagogue complex and the lakes of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District for a two- or three-day trip.
