Pieniny National Park

Pieniny National Park (say "pyeh-NEE-nee") is Poland's oldest national park, founded on June 1, 1932, and one of the most beautiful corners of the Polish Carpathians. On just 23.5 km² it packs dramatic limestone peaks, the Three Crowns (Trzy Korony) and Sokolica, a river gorge where wooden rafts have carried visitors for generations, and a hilltop castle ruin. It lies on the Slovak border, about two hours' drive south of Kraków.

Why the Pieniny are special

The park was created in 1932 together with a nature reserve on the then-Czechoslovak side of the Dunajec River; today Slovakia has its own Pieniny National Park (PIENAP), and the two form a cross-border protected area. The Pieniny are a narrow range of limestone crags sliced through by the Dunajec, creating one of Central Europe's most scenic gorges.

Biodiversity is remarkable for such a small area: around 1,100 vascular plant species, including endemics, and about 7,000 animal species. The park's emblem is the Apollo butterfly, the subject of a dedicated conservation program. On top of Sokolica grows a gnarled relict pine, one of Poland's most photographed trees – its crown was snapped off in September 2018 by the downdraft of a rescue helicopter, but the tree still clings to the rock.

Things to do in Pieniny National Park

• Three Crowns (Trzy Korony, 982 m) – the range's signature peak. The viewing platform on its highest rock, Okrąglica, looks over the gorge, Lake Czorsztyn and, on clear days, the High Tatras.
• Sokolica (747 m) – a crag above a bend in the Dunajec, famous for its pine tree and views.
• Dunajec raft trip – a ride on traditional wooden rafts poled by local raftsmen in folk dress, from Sromowce-Kąty to Szczawnica (about 18 km, roughly 2 hours 15 minutes) or Krościenko (about 23 km).
• Czorsztyn Castle – a ruined medieval border fortress above the reservoir, with an exhibition and a viewing tower.
• Nature exhibition in Krościenko – a good introduction before hiking.

Trails and hiking times

There are about 35 km of marked trails. Official walking times:

• Three Crowns loop from Krościenko: 2 h 10 min up, 1 h 30 min down;
• Three Crowns loop from Sromowce Niżne: 1 h 40 min up, 1 h down;
• Sokolica from Szczawnica (including a short boat crossing): 1 h up, 35 min down.

Fit hikers can link the Three Crowns and Sokolica along the Sokola Perć ridge path, a full-day route with rocky, exposed sections. The final section to the Okrąglica platform involves steep steps and railings, and in summer there are lines at the top. In October 2026 the park warns that trails are muddy and slippery; hiking poles and shoes with good grip are recommended.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026:

• Entry to the park is free, and trails are open year-round.
• Three Crowns and Sokolica viewpoints: 10 PLN standard, 5 PLN reduced, free for children under 7. One ticket covers both on the same day. Fees apply April 1–November 15.
• Raft trip: season April 1–October 31. Szczawnica route 111 PLN (78 PLN for children up to 10), 117/82 PLN in peak periods; Krościenko route 134/94 PLN. Park entry is included. A return shuttle to the parking lot costs extra.
• Czorsztyn Castle: October–April 10 a.m.–3 p.m. (closed Mondays), May–September 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; 12 PLN, reduced 6 PLN.

Signs and park information are mainly in Polish; raftsmen often share stories in Polish only.

Getting there and best time to visit

Base yourself in Krościenko nad Dunajcem or Szczawnica. From Kraków, the nearest international airport, it is roughly 2–2.5 hours by car; buses and minibuses also run to Szczawnica and Krościenko. Zakopane is about an hour away, so the Pieniny combine well with a Tatra trip.

Is it worth visiting? Absolutely – especially in May, June or September, when crowds are thinner. October brings beautiful autumn color but short days, and rafts stop at the end of the month. Start early for the best light and quieter summits.

Nearby

Across the river in Slovakia stands the Red Monastery (Červený Kláštor), linked by a riverside path for walkers and cyclists. Szczawnica has a chairlift up Palenica, and Niedzica Castle overlooks Lake Czorsztyn.
