Gryfice, West Pomeranian
The Seaside Narrow Gauge Railway (Nadmorska Kolej Wąskotorowa) in Gryfice is one of Poland's most popular heritage railways. Its 1,000 mm gauge trains run from the town of Gryfice through the Baltic resorts of Trzęsacz, Rewal and Niechorze to Pogorzelica, just behind the dunes. Riding behind a vintage diesel locomotive is a trip in itself, and it is also a relaxed way to see the coast without sitting in summer traffic. Here is how to plan your ride.
Gryfice (pronounced gri-FEE-tse) is in West Pomerania, about 60 km as the crow flies northeast of Szczecin, the nearest big city and the usual gateway for visitors arriving from Berlin or by plane. You can reach Gryfice by train or bus from Szczecin and Kołobrzeg. The currency is the zloty (PLN). The railway has a page in English with routes and fares.
The line opened in 1896 as a Prussian local railway with a 1,000 mm gauge, linking Gryfice (then Greifenberg) with the coast. It carried locals and holidaymakers for decades. After the Second World War it was run by Polish State Railways, and since 2002 it has belonged to the municipality of Rewal. Winter services have run since 26 December 2014, which is unusual for a heritage line in Poland.
There are two routes:
The coastal section is the prettiest: you pass the Niechorze lighthouse, pine forest and resort villages. Windows open, and the conductor sells tickets on board.
You can break your journey: under the standard ticket terms you may get off and continue later on another train in the same direction.
Set aside half a day for the full route, or 2-3 hours for the seaside route with a stop. The carriages are old and the steps high, so wheelchair users and parents with large strollers should call ahead. Bicycles are carried for a fee, and the railway's site has a separate page on pets.
Gryfice Wąskotorowe station is next to the bus station, approached from ul. Kościuszki 70, with free parking at the station. The office phone is +48 91 38 42 235 and the information line +48 798 627 070. Is it worth it? Yes, especially combined with the Trzęsacz cliff and the Niechorze lighthouse.
The Trzęsacz church ruins and viewing platform, the Niechorze lighthouse and the beaches of Rewal and Pogorzelica are the closest highlights.
