Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno

The Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno presents the beginnings of Polish statehood through people, objects and everyday life rather than a single date in a textbook. Its main exhibition covers the period from the early 10th century, before the reign of Mieszko I, to the 13th century. It is a useful stop before Gniezno Cathedral and the rest of the Piast Trail.

What to see

Start with The Beginnings of the Polish State exhibition. It brings together archaeological finds and replicas connected with the first Piasts, daily life, beliefs and the organisation of the early state. Also look for the exhibitions on Slavic motifs in art, artistic visions of the Piast dynasty and Gniezno ceramics, including Romanesque tiles and later stove tiles from the region.

Why visit

The museum holds around 20,000 archaeological, historical and art objects. Its strength is the combination of original artefacts, reconstructions and a clear explanation of how local strongholds became part of a state. Allow about 90–120 minutes for a comfortable visit.

Practical information

The museum is at 1 Kostrzewskiego Street, by national road DK15. Free parking for cars is available opposite the building; coaches can use the parking area on Piotrowskiego Street, about 500 metres away. From May to September it is open 09:00–18:00; from October to April, 09:00–16:00. Sundays are free, and ticket sales end 15 minutes before the exhibition closes.

Tripto tip: combine the museum with Gniezno Cathedral, but do not treat it as an optional extra. This is where the city’s early medieval monuments start to make sense.
