Museum of Tarnów History

In the northern frontage of the Tarnów market square, in two Renaissance townhouses from the 16th century at numbers 20 and 21, operates the Museum of Tarnów and Region History — a branch of the Muzeum Ziemi Tarnowskiej, established on 30 July 2020. The townhouses with preserved arcades are among the most distinctive buildings on the square, and the story of the city is told inside in a way that attracts adults and children alike.

Through the halls with a ticket punch

A visit starts with a ritual: you punch your ticket in a vintage ticket punch, and at the end of the route, as a reward, the barrel organ's anthem sounds — the same organ grinder whose monument stands in Tarnów behind the Great Stairs. The route through the halls is marked by the perforated tape of a barrel organ. In the "under the eagle" hall you can see valuable parchment documents, in the armoury medieval swords, in the cellar the prehistoric era, and from the windows of a reconstructed carriage of the Tarnów tram, called "biedronka" (ladybird), the old Tarnów looks out from archival photographs. The Second World War is also present, and classic exhibits are complemented by moving images and multimedia.
