St. Leonard’s Church in Wojnicz is a small wooden filial church on St. Leonard Street. Its log construction, shingle roof and historic surroundings make it a worthwhile stop in Wojnicz. The interior is notable for its Renaissance paintings.

History and architecture

According to the official parish website, a church stood here as early as 1209, while the present building was erected in the 17th century. VisitMałopolska dates it to the second half of the 16th century, so this discrepancy should be stated transparently. In 2014–2015 the roof, façades and fencing were renovated. The single-nave church has a three-sided presbytery and a north-side sacristy. A false barrel vault covers the nave; a shingled roof with a small bell turret tops the building. The church, its surroundings and trees are listed as A-310.

Interior and planning your visit

The main highlight is the late-19th-century Neo-Renaissance high altar with paintings from an older altarpiece, made around 1560 by Stanisław Tarczowski: the Visitation, St. Helena and St. Catherine; St. Leonard appears above. Also look for the two side altars, a bell cast in 1655 and a stone statue from 1889. This active filial church does not guarantee regular sightseeing access. The regional trail lists services at 08:00 Monday–Thursday, 15:00 on Fridays, and 17:00 on Sundays and holidays, or 15:00 in winter.
