Church of St Catherine in Brodnica

The Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Brodnica is a Gothic parish church near the Drwęca river and market square. Its brick structure developed in stages from the late 13th to the 14th century, while the interior preserves works that reflect the former importance of this town in the Chełmno Land.

Built between 1285 and 1370

Construction began in 1285 with the chancel, completed around 1320. The nave and vaults were built between 1340 and 1370; the tower followed and was later raised. The church is a three-aisle hall with a straight-ended chancel. The west facade hints that a more elaborate tower arrangement was originally planned.

Apostles and the Sauer organ

The most valuable furnishings are the sculptures of the twelve apostles from the second half of the 14th century. Also look for a 16th-century Crucifixion group, a 17th-century stone font and star vaults with carved bosses. Since 1875 the liturgy has been accompanied by a 25-stop organ from the workshop of Wilhelm Sauer in Frankfurt an der Oder.

Practical information

The church is on Farna Street, a few minutes’ walk from the market square and city museums. It is an active parish church, so check current services and access outside worship before visiting. Combine it with a walk by the Drwęca, the castle and Brodnica’s medieval centre; allow 30–45 minutes for the church.
