Museum in Brodnica

The Museum in Brodnica arranges its exhibitions in three historic buildings in the town centre. The main seat is a baroque granary from the first half of the 17th century with a decorative Renaissance gable at St James Street. The other venues are the cellars of the 14th-century Teutonic castle at Zamkowa Street and the Chełmno Gate, also called the Stone Gate, erected in 1310–1330 and raised by one storey around 1370 — in the 19th century it served as a prison, and since the 1970s it has belonged to the museum. The institution was founded in 1973 as the Regional Museum and has used its present name since 1989.

The exhibitions

In the granary you will see an exhibition about the Mesolithic hunters of Mszano from 10,000 years ago, presenting the results of excavations carried out in the vicinity of that village. In the castle cellars awaits the archaeology of the medieval Brodnica land: crossbow bolts, swords, tools and models of strongholds, as well as sculpture and architectural details from the no longer existing castle chapel. The Chełmno Gate houses a gallery, and the adjoining town house at the Small Market Square holds four rooms for temporary exhibitions and the office of the archaeology department.

The knights by the museum

The Brotherhood of the Brodnica Castle Knights has operated alongside the institution for years, focusing its activity by Lake Foluszek, in a stronghold it built with its own hands; in the town there is also the Circle of Knights of Brodnica Castle with a court dance ensemble. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday; out of season Mondays are closed; admission is charged.
