St John the Baptist Church in Choroń

St John the Baptist Church in Choroń stands on a hill in one of the most scenic parts of the Poraj municipality. This small church combines a rural scale with Renaissance details and makes a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring the northern Kraków-Częstochowa Jura.

From chapel to parish

Worship at the site existed at least from the 16th century, when it served as a branch of the parish in Przybynów. The present church was built in 1657 on the site of an earlier chapel and later enlarged by the Byliński family. The independent parish of St John the Baptist was established in 1916. This continuity makes the building an important part of local history, not simply a monument to view from outside.

Renaissance portals and a Jura landscape

The church has a simple elongated rectangular body and a narrower, rectangular-ended chancel. Look for the two Renaissance portals in the elevations. A polygonal tower rises above the building and is capped with a pyramidal roof and a small roof turret. Its hilltop setting opens views towards Poraj Reservoir and the Jura hills, including the Sokole Mountains area.

The church is at 3 Częstochowska Street in Choroń. It is an active church, so check current service times and interior access before entering. The visit combines well with Poraj Reservoir, a trip through Olsztyn and walks on the Jura trails. Allow about 20–30 minutes for the church and a short viewpoint stop.
