St James the Apostle Church in Murowana Goślina

St James the Apostle Church in Murowana Goślina stands beside the market square and is one of the town’s most important monuments. Its medieval roots are visible in the Gothic nave, while the present appearance also reflects a Baroque chancel, later rebuilding and valuable furnishings.

Gothic nave and Baroque chancel

The oldest part of the church dates from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Granite elements in the western facade may point to an earlier building. A Baroque chancel was added to the Gothic nave in the 18th century, followed by a major 19th-century rebuilding. After wartime damage and use as a warehouse, the church was restored and partly re-Gothicised.

Altar, choir stalls and the Potulicka tomb

The high altar from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries carries a painting of St James and Gothic sculptures. The nave preserves Baroque side altars and late-Renaissance choir stalls from the 17th century. Also look for a Greater Poland school painting of the Madonna behind an 18th-century silver dressing, and the Renaissance tomb slab of Urszula Potulicka née Ostroróg, who died in 1575.

Practical information

The church is at 21 Powstańców Wielkopolskich Square, directly beside the market. It is an active church, so check service times and interior access before entering. The visit combines well with a walk around the market and towards the Noteć Forest; allow 30–45 minutes for the church and nearby monuments.
