Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Ujazd Śląski

The Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Ujazd Śląski stands in the town centre, opposite the castle ruins. Its history reaches back to the Middle Ages, while its present appearance combines remains of an older church with the Baroque rebuilding of 1613 and later alterations.

From a Romanesque church to the Baroque

The first church was built after Ujazd received its town charter in the 13th century and had defensive features. In 1613 it was rebuilt and enlarged in the Baroque style; surviving older elements and later tower additions show how the building changed over the centuries. In 1863 the towers received Neo-Gothic tops.

Kutzer’s altar and Haas’s organ

The main feature is the high altar made in 1826–1833 by Bernard Kutzer and Karl Steckel, with figures of St Andrew, St Peter and St Paul. Kutzer also created the 1826 pulpit and the superstructure of the baptismal font. The gallery preserves an organ by Johann Haas of Baborów from 1849, and the church also contains a Renaissance painting of the Madonna and Child.

After seeing the church, walk to the castle ruins across the street; together they make a short route through Ujazd’s historic centre. Allow about 45–60 minutes for the stop.
