Lake Pławniowice

Lake Pławniowice was not created by leisure planners – it exists because water kept flooding a sand quarry. The pit, which supplied backfill sand for Silesian coal mines, was flooded in the 1970s, and today it is a favourite spot for people from Gliwice and Pyskowice: about 250 ha of water, a lifeguarded bathing area at Niewiesze, sailing, and outside the season, quiet shores and migrating birds.

History: a sand pit that refused to stay dry

Sand extraction moved from Pławniowice towards Niewiesze and kept hitting groundwater, springs and mud flows. At first the outlet of the Toszecki Stream was blamed, so in the mid-1960s its bed was moved. The problem remained, so the decision was made to flood the pit and use it as a balancing reservoir for the nearby Gliwice Canal. Some sources give 1970 as the start of the reservoir, while a local website for Niewiesze says work began before 1970 and the lake was flooded in 1974.

Over time the reservoir lost its industrial role and became a recreation area. Local sources put it at about 3 km long and 1.2 km wide, with a maximum depth of about 16 m. It is divided into a large and a small basin and is fed by the Toszecki Stream. Some years ago the lake was cleaned up with the help of scientists from the Silesian University of Technology, and in autumn large flocks of migrating birds now stop here.

Beach and bathing area

The best-equipped shore is at Niewiesze: a wide, well-kept beach with a gentle slope into the water, large car parks and food outlets. The designated bathing area "Słoneczna Plaża" (Sunny Beach) operates here; according to the national water authority, Wody Polskie, it was open from 13 June to 30 August in the 2026 season. The dates change every year, and water quality is published on the sanitary inspectorate's bathing-water website. The Pławniowice shore has a smaller car park and a less pleasant entry into the water, but more places to eat. On windy days sailors take to the lake.

• Pławniowice Palace – a residence of the Ballestrem family built in 1882–1885 in Dutch Mannerist Revival style, with a 2.4 ha park. Today it is an education and retreat centre of the Diocese of Gliwice, and the former palace chapel serves as the parish church.
• Traces of a medieval stronghold – in the 1960s, walls of an unknown fortress were found in Pławniowice, probably the one held in 1393 by a Polish garrison under Piotr Szafraniec.
• The Gliwice Canal, which runs close to the lake.

Tripto tip

There are two ways to the lake: from Niewiesze (turn into Słoneczna Street as you leave Niewiesze on the motorway side) and from Pławniowice, where the signs for the Panorama restaurant are the easiest to follow. There is no access to the water from Wędkarska and Rzeczna Streets in Niewiesze. On hot summer weekends, expect to park several hundred metres from the beach, so arrive early. Outside the bathing season there are no lifeguards – that is when the lake is best for walks and birdwatching.
