Camaldolese Hermitage at Bielany

The Camaldolese Hermitage at Bielany (Polish: Klasztor na Bielanach, roughly "KLAHSH-tor nah byeh-LAH-nakh") is a Baroque monastery on Silver Mountain, rising above the Vistula valley at the edge of Wolski Forest on Kraków's western outskirts. Its white church façade is visible from far across the city, but the real draw is that hermit monks still live here, each in his own small house. It's a place of silence rather than a typical sight, so check the visiting rules before you go, especially if you're a woman.

A short history

Grand Marshal Mikołaj Wolski brought the Camaldolese monks to Kraków in 1603, after meeting the order on a diplomatic mission to the Pope. The hill belonged to nobleman Sebastian Lubomirski, who refused to sell it. Wolski asked for it publicly at a banquet and gave Lubomirski a set of silver tableware in return, which is said to explain the name Silver Mountain. "Bielany" comes from the monks' white habits.

The church and hermitage were built in 1609–1630 and consecrated in 1642. After a construction accident, Italian architect Andrea Spezza took over. Inside you'll see stucco work from the workshop of Giovanni Battista Falconi and paintings by Tommaso Dolabella, court painter to Poland's Vasa kings.

What you'll see

• The monumental stone façade with two towers.
• The church interior, with rich stucco, side chapels and an Assumption painting at the high altar.
• The crypt below the chancel, where deceased monks rest in wall niches for a century before being moved to a common tomb.
• The walled lane to the gate; a wall roughly a kilometer long encloses the whole hermitage.

Behind the church lies the monks' zone of silence, with rows of hermit houses. It's not open to visitors.

Visiting rules and hours

The Camaldolese follow a strict rule, and visiting arrangements go back to a papal bull of 1610. According to the order's notices, as of October 2026:

• Men may visit daily 10:00–11:00 and 15:30–16:30; the gate is staffed 8:00–11:45 and 15:30–17:00. Don't ring during the monks' prayer time, 11:45–15:15.
• Women may enter on only 12 days a year, including March 25, Easter Sunday, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, August 15 and September 8. The remaining dates in 2026 are December 8 and December 25 (excluding Midnight Mass).

Modest dress is required: no shorts or bare shoulders. There's no ticket. Remember that this is a working monastery, so keep your voice down.

How to get there

The hermitage is at 1 Konarowa Avenue, roughly 7 km (4 miles) west of the Main Market Square. The easiest options are a taxi or a city bus toward Bielany and Wolski Forest (check current routes in the Kraków public transport planner), followed by a short walk. From Kraków Airport, it's roughly a 20-minute drive. The visit itself takes about 30 minutes, but it's worth adding a forest walk.

Is it worth visiting?

If you want a quieter side of Kraków, yes, and for men the regular daily hours make it easy. Combine it with Piłsudski Mound on Sowiniec hill, the Kraków Zoo in Wolski Forest, or a riverside bike ride to the Benedictine abbey in Tyniec.
