Kalwaria Pacławska Sanctuary

Kalwaria Pacławska (roughly "kahl-VAR-yah pahts-WAHF-skah") is a Franciscan pilgrimage sanctuary on a forested hill about 465 m (1,525 ft) above the Wiar River valley in southeastern Poland, close to the Ukrainian border. Founded in 1665, it combines a Baroque basilica with a revered icon of the Virgin Mary and around 40 chapels scattered through woods and meadows, a "Calvary" recreating the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem. Even if you aren't religious, the landscape and the silence make it a memorable detour.

Where it is

The sanctuary lies in the Przemyśl Foothills, about 24 km (15 miles) southwest of the historic city of Przemyśl. The nearest international airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka; Kraków is about 240 km (150 miles) away by road. You'll need a car or a taxi from Przemyśl, and there is parking by the sanctuary.

A short history

In 1665, the Podolian governor Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro founded a Franciscan friary and a Calvary here; the friary grounds were even fortified as a five-sided bastion. The present Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross was built in 1770–1775, funded by Szczepan Józef Dwernicki, who is buried in its crypt. Fires struck in 1855, 1862 and 1956. Future Pope John Paul II, then Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, visited in 1968, and in 2020 the church was raised to the rank of minor basilica.

Things to see

• The basilica, with its Baroque interior and the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria, brought from Kamianets-Podilskyi (now in Ukraine).
• The Calvary paths, with about 42 chapels in brick and wood, including Pilate's House, Caiaphas's House and the Holy Sepulchre.
• The viewing tower at the edge of the hill, overlooking the Wiar valley and villages across the border in Ukraine.
• Three small museums: on the founders, on the Virgin Mary (with items from Wojtyła's visit), and on Franciscan missions, including the friars martyred in Pariacoto, Peru.

How to visit

Allow 2 hours for the basilica, the tower and a short walk. The paths vary from the Rosary Path (about 900 m) to the Way of the Cross (about 4 km, roughly 2 hours with prayers) and the Passion Paths (about 8 km). Maps are available in the basilica and shop. Trails cross forest and meadow and can be muddy after rain.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

The sanctuary and paths are free and open year-round. The viewing tower is open 24 hours and costs 6 PLN (Polish złoty), paid by card at the gate; up to six people at a time. The museums open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by arrangement. A pilgrim house offers accommodation and seasonal food. Information is mostly in Polish. The busiest days are the Great Indulgence in mid-August and the Exaltation of the Cross feast in September.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you're in the Przemyśl area. Pair it with Przemyśl's old town and fortress, and the Renaissance castle in nearby Krasiczyn.
