Lake Mamry in Masuria

Mamry is one of the most distinctive bodies of water in northern Masuria: a broad system of connected lakes, bays, peninsulas and islands. It suits visitors who want to sail, kayak or simply experience the Great Masurian Lakes from the shore. Węgorzewo is the most convenient base, while Mamerki, Sztynort and the route towards Giżycko make useful additions to a day on the water.

The lake from the water

A navigable route runs across Mamry and connects Węgorzewo with the southern part of the Great Masurian Lakes system. A cruise is the easiest introduction to the wide bays; a boat, kayak or SUP board gives you more freedom to choose a route. The open water can become windy quickly, so check the forecast and sailing notices before setting out.

Islands and nature protection

The Islands on the Mamry and Kisajno Lakes nature reserve protects breeding sites for water and marsh birds. It includes islands such as Upałty, Sosnówka and Piramidowa; entry and camping are prohibited on the reserve islands. Watch birds from the water, keep away from colonies and never land where conservation rules forbid it.

Planning your visit

For a first visit, choose a harbour or viewpoint near Węgorzewo. With more time, combine the lake with Mamerki, the Masurian Canal or a cruise towards Giżycko. Marinas and cruises are easiest to use in the season, but they are also busiest then. Check current timetables, prices, mooring availability and equipment rental before travelling.
