Museum of Memorabilia in Ząbkowice Śląskie

The Regional Memorabilia Chamber named after Józef Glabiszewski operates in the oldest residential building of Ząbkowice Śląskie — the so-called Knight Kauffung Manor at Krzywa 1 Street, erected in 1526. The museum opened in 1972 on the initiative of local collector Józef Glabiszewski, whose name it still bears.

Interior and collections

The former manor has retained its stucco vaults and inter-window columns, and inside the building hides a well 20 metres deep. The exhibits tell the story of Ząbkowice and the region — from crafts to the everyday life of the inhabitants. In the basement operates the Frankenstein Laboratory, referring to the most surprising episode in the town's history.

The case of the gravediggers of 1606

For centuries Ząbkowice bore the German name Frankenstein. In 1606 eight gravediggers — six men and two women — arrived in the town and scattered poison at night. More than 2,000 people died. The perpetrators were sentenced to be burned alive; the sentence was carried out on 4 October 1606. This story helped make the "Frankenstein" town famous — an identity the town still embraces today.
