Grojec — the Hill above Żywiec

Grojec is a hill within Żywiec, in the Żywiec Valley, with three summits: Mały Grojec (about 422 m above sea level), Średni Grojec, also called Kopiec (about 475 m), and Duży Grojec (612 m). Its position above the town makes it a good walking destination with views of Żywiec, Lake Żywiec and the surrounding Beskids. Polish descriptions sometimes use the names Mały, Średni and Duży Grojec inconsistently, so checking the route is useful.

The Papal Cross on Średni Grojec

Średni Grojec is marked by a metal Papal Cross, placed there after Pope John Paul II’s visit to Żywiec on 22 May 1995. The area around the cross looks towards the town and the Little, Silesian and Żywiec Beskids. It is the hill’s best-known landmark, but not its only destination. On the way, look for the small Stations of the Cross shrines and the changing views across the Żywiec Valley.

Trails and planning

Local walking routes and the yellow trail lead from Żywiec towards Duży Grojec and the Żywiec Brewery. A shorter walk can finish around Średni Grojec; a longer version crosses the successive summits. Parking is available around the Grojec Amphitheatre, but follow signs and local restrictions. The hill is open terrain, and stony sections can become slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip.
