Co-Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żywiec

The Co-Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żywiec is the city’s most important religious monument and a rewarding stop in the centre. The church has medieval roots, but its structure and interior combine Gothic, Renaissance and later alterations. In 1992 the parish church became the co-cathedral of the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec.

From Gothic to Baroque

The first church was probably built before 1470. Between 1515 and 1542, the presbytery and naves were enlarged, and in 1547 the church was consecrated under the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and St Lawrence. The tower was rebuilt several times after damage, including lightning strikes. The building therefore records the history of Żywiec and its benefactors.

What to see

Inside, look for the polychrome relief of the Dormition of the Virgin from around 1500, the high altar, side chapels and furnishings from different periods. A Habsburg funerary chapel, designed by Franciszek Mączyński, was added beside the south wall in 1929. It is a detail that gives the co-cathedral a character beyond that of an ordinary parish church.

Practical information

The church is active, so visit outside services. The parish also opens the tower with an exhibition and viewing terrace; hours are seasonal and entry is offered at set times. Check current prices, availability and reservations on the parish website before travelling. The co-cathedral combines easily with the market square, castle and Habsburg park.
