Pepper Mountains in Sandomierz

The Pepper Mountains, also called Pieprzówki, lie about 2.5 km from Sandomierz Old Town on the edge of the Vistula valley. Dark Cambrian clay shales around 500 million years old form a steep slope with rocky outcrops. This nature reserve is a good destination for a brief walk with river views.

Cambrian shales and wild roses

The name refers to shales breaking into dark pieces that resemble peppercorns. The reserve protects xerothermic grasslands and scrub with a notable concentration of wild roses. Dwarf cherry, needle grass and rare rose species grow here. Early summer is usually best for the bloom; do not pick plants.

Trail and Vistula views

The red hiking trail crosses the reserve and can be linked with a walk from Sandomierz Market Square. The valley edge looks over the Vistula, former river channels and the surrounding landscape. Morning or pre-sunset light is good for photographs. After rain, loess and grass paths can be slippery.

Practical information

Start from the Sandomierz side and check the red-trail route before setting out. The reserve covers about 18 hectares: stay on the trail, do not pick plants and do not light fires. Bring water, sun protection and shoes with good grip; the open slope can be hot in summer. Combine the walk with the old town.
