Fountain of Lech, Czech and Rus in Pobiedziska

The Fountain of Lech, Czech and Rus stands on the Market Square in Pobiedziska, between Poznań and Gniezno on the Piast Trail. It is a free outdoor attraction and a useful landmark during a short walk through the centre. The sculpture connects local tradition with the legend of the Slavic beginnings.

The legend of three brothers

The sculpture depicts Lech, Czech and Rus, the legendary brothers from the traditional story of three Slavic communities. In the best-known version, Lech sees a white eagle and founds Gniezno, while Czech travels south and Rus east. A local tradition says the brothers stopped in Pobiedziska for a meal; the town’s name is sometimes linked to the old word for having lunch.

The fountain on the square

The fountain with the three brothers was installed on the square in 2010. Look at the figures from close up and use them as the starting point for a walk through the historic centre. The Gothic Church of St Michael the Archangel is a few steps away. The sculpture is best understood through its symbolism and Piast heritage.

Nearby sights

Combine it with the Open-Air Museum of Miniatures of the Piast Trail and the Pobiedziska stronghold with medieval siege machines. For a longer trip, consider Ostrów Lednicki or Giecz. The public square is free to visit and needs no reservation. Water operation may depend on season and maintenance.
