Gród Pobiedziska Stronghold

Gród Pobiedziska (roughly "groot poh-byeh-JEE-skah"; "gród" means a fortified settlement) is a reconstructed early medieval stronghold and family history park in western Poland, halfway between Poznań and Gniezno. Behind its timber palisade stands a collection of full-size medieval siege engines, plus hands-on activities that turn history into play. It is one of the best things to do with kids along the Piast Trail.

What it is

This is a modern reconstruction, not an archaeological site. It recalls the wooden strongholds of the Piast dynasty, which founded the Polish state in the 10th century, with a gate tower and earth ramparts. It opened on June 2, 2012, created by the Siege Studio workshop. The aim is to show how siege engines worked and how strongholds were attacked and defended.

Siege engines and activities

The permanent display includes:

• a siege tower and a battering ram worked by 14 people,
• a trebuchet and an onager, both throwing machines,
• a rampart crossbow and a perrière,
• mantlets, mobile shields that protected attackers.

Information boards explain each machine. With staff supervision, you can draw the giant crossbow or fire a throwing engine (a catapult shot costs extra). The ticket also covers an armory where you can try on helmets and swords, a foam-sword combat arena, a jousting track with a wooden horse and lance, mini catapults, a wooden fishing game, Viking-style kubb, a playground and climbing on the ramparts with a slide. Archery and ax or javelin throwing run as scheduled workshops.

Under a timber shelter you can book a campfire and try medieval-style cooking with a forged tripod, grill, kettles and a griddle for flatbreads (extra charge, reservation needed). The site also hosts children's birthday parties, school programs and corporate events, and reenactment and knightly shows are held here. There is a small souvenir shop.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, per the official website:

• Individual visitors: May to September. Weekends 10 am–4 pm in May, June and September; daily 10 am–4 pm in July and August.
• Groups: April to October by advance booking.

So in October, independent travelers cannot visit without arranging it in advance. Tickets cost 20 PLN (adult), 15 PLN (reduced) and 60 PLN for a family of four; children under 3 enter free. Cards and the Polish BLIK mobile payment are accepted.

Getting there

The address is Fabryczna 68, Pobiedziska, beside regional road 194, the old Poznań–Gniezno road. It is about 25 km (15 miles) from both Poznań and Gniezno; Poznań has the nearest international airport. There is a large free parking lot, and the nearest train stop is Pobiedziska Letnisko on the Poznań–Gniezno line. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours, or half a day with the neighboring Miniature Park.

Is it worth visiting?

For families with children aged roughly 4 to 12, definitely: almost everything can be touched, tried or climbed. Adults interested in medieval warfare will enjoy seeing full-size machines up close. If you are not traveling with kids, combine it with the Miniature Park next door and with Gniezno Cathedral or Ostrów Lednicki, where the Polish state began.
