Wooden Church in Modlnica

The Church of St Adalbert and Our Lady of Sorrows in Modlnica is one of the most valuable wooden monuments near Kraków. It stands at 81 Świętego Wojciecha Street, near the road to Olkusz, and belongs to the Wooden Architecture Trail of Małopolska. The present church was built in 1553 and consecrated two years later.

History and form

The church was built through the efforts of the parish priest Jakub Biskupiec, known as Pontificjusz, on the site of an earlier building. It originally had a cross-shaped layout, but in 1622 the northern arm was replaced with the masonry Renaissance funerary Chapel of St Anne of the Kucharski family. A western vestibule was added in 1878–1879.

The interior

The main highlight is the Renaissance figural polychromy from 1562, including the genealogy of Christ, a Passion cycle and moral scenes. Some paintings were uncovered during conservation work in 1956. The Baroque high altar from 1723 contains a Gothic Hodegetria-type image of the Virgin and Child, venerated as miraculous.
