John Paul II Family Home in Wadowice

The John Paul II Family Home in Wadowice (say "vah-doh-VEE-tseh") is a biographical museum in the house where Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, was born on May 18, 1920. At its heart is the reconstructed apartment of the Wojtyła family; around it, a modern narrative exhibition spreads over four floors and 16 zones (about 1,200 m²), telling the story of his life from childhood to the papacy. Around 250,000 people visit each year, making it one of the key stops for anyone interested in the Polish pope.

Where it is and how to get there

Wadowice is a small town about 50 km southwest of Kraków, reachable by train or minibus; from the station, walk to the main square. The museum stands at Kościelna 7, right on the square next to the basilica. There's no museum parking and no drop-off right at the door, so use the public car parks in the town center (some are paid). Many visitors combine Wadowice with Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage park nearby, or with a day in Kraków.

The story of the house

The townhouse dates from around 1870. The Wojtyłas — Karol senior, Emilia and their elder son Edmund — moved in in 1919, renting a two-room apartment with a kitchen from a Jewish merchant, Chiel Bałamuth. Karol's mother died here in 1929, and his brother Edmund three years later. In summer 1938, after finishing school, Karol moved to Kraków with his father.

After his election as pope on October 16, 1978, pilgrims started knocking on the door even though tenants still lived in the apartment. A museum opened on May 18, 1984. In 2006 the building was bought and handed to the Archdiocese of Kraków, and it was rebuilt by Kłaput Project, the studio behind the concept of the Warsaw Rising Museum. The new exhibition opened on April 9, 2014.

What to see

• The family apartment: three connecting rooms furnished from neighbors' memories, with Emilia's silver handbag and gold locket and the family tableware. Karol was born in the small middle room.
• Interwar Wadowice, including a re-created shop of the Bałamuth family and the lifelong friendship between Karol and his Jewish schoolmate Jerzy Kluger. Before World War II, Jews made up about 20% of the town.
• The Kraków years: university, forced labor at the Solvay plant during the Nazi occupation, priesthood and his 1958 consecration as bishop.
• The papacy: his first papal cassock from October 16, 1978, and a room about the May 13, 1981 assassination attempt, displaying the original Browning HP pistol.
• His travels: 104 apostolic journeys to 129 countries.

Opening hours and tickets (as of October 2026)

• October 2026: Mon and Wed–Sun 9 am – 6 pm, Tue noon – 6 pm; last entry 4:45 pm.
• Winter (November 2026 – March 2027): Mon and Wed–Sun 9 am – 4 pm, Tue noon – 4 pm; last entry 2:45 pm.
• Closed on the last Tuesday of each month, November 1, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, January 1 and 6.
• Tickets: 34 PLN standard, 27 PLN reduced; with audio guide 44/37 PLN; family ticket from 85 PLN.
• Free admission on Tuesdays (except the last Tuesday), with free tickets released online two weeks ahead.
• The ticket office has moved to Kościelna 2, behind the museum.

Tips for visiting

• Plan 1 to 1.5 hours. Guided tours are in Polish only, but audio guides come in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and other languages, and there's a free app.
• Entry is by timed slot with a daily ticket limit — book online, especially from May to October.
• On the last Sunday of the month, the final two opening hours are "quiet hours" without multimedia and music.
• Is it worth visiting? Yes, even for non-Catholics: it's a well-made museum about 20th-century Poland as much as about the pope.

Next door is the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where Karol Wojtyła was baptized; its sundial bears the words "Time flies, eternity awaits". Try a kremówka, the cream cake the pope fondly remembered, in one of the cafés on the square.
