Archcathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Łódź

The Archcathedral Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka at 265 Piotrkowska Street is one of Łódź’s most important Neo-Gothic churches. Built from pale, unplastered brick, it remains a distinctive part of the city skyline. Inside, brick vaults, stained glass and furnishings reflect the history of the Łódź diocese.

Building history

A construction committee involving Łódź factory owners was formed in 1895. The foundation stone was blessed on 16 June 1901, and the walls were completed in 1909 to a design by the Wende i Zarske firm, later adjusted by Sławomir Dziekoński and Józef Odrzywolski. The church was consecrated in 1922 and its tower completed in 1927. It became a cathedral in 1920 and received archcathedral status in 1992, when the Archdiocese of Łódź was created.

Interior and organs

The main choir holds a 58-stop organ, while a second 10-stop instrument stands beside the presbytery. During the Second World War, the furnishings were looted and the stained glass and Zygmunt bell, known as the “Heart of Łódź”, were destroyed; a new bell was cast in 2011. A roof fire on 11 May 1971 caused serious damage, and the church reopened in December 1972.

Practical information

This is an active church on busy Piotrkowska Street. Check the parish website for the current Mass schedule and organ concerts. A multimedia Centre for Interculturality operates below the church. Admission is free, but visitors should remain quiet and avoid disturbing worship.
