Jaworki, Lesser Poland
The Homole Gorge (Polish: Wąwóz Homole, say "VON-voos ho-MO-leh") is a short, spectacular limestone ravine in the village of Jaworki near Szczawnica, in the Little Pieniny Mountains of southern Poland. In about 800 meters the Kamionka stream tumbles past cliffs up to 120 meters high, and you follow it on metal footbridges and wooden steps beside small waterfalls. Protected as a nature reserve since 1963, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding family walks in the region.
Jaworki lies a few kilometers east of Szczawnica, close to the Slovak border, about 2.5 hours by car from Kraków and its international airport. The gorge entrance is right by the village road, beyond a parking lot.
The Kamionka stream cut through Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone, leaving reddish rock walls colored by iron compounds. The name comes from the Rusyn word homoła, meaning "rounded" or "hornless" — Jaworki was once a Rusyn village. A document from 1529 mentions an abandoned castle called Castrum Homola, and archaeologists confirmed remains of a fortification here in 1988. Treasure hunters have searched the gorge since the 15th century; old mining shafts survive on one slope.
Walking through the gorge to the meadow and back takes about an hour. For more, follow the green trail up to Wysokie Skałki (1,050 m), the highest point of the Pieniny: about 1 h 45 min up and 1 h 15 min down. You can also climb to the Little Pieniny ridge and follow the blue trail to Palenica above Szczawnica.
In season there may be a fee collection point at the entrance; the 2026 amount is not published by an official source, so bring some small change in złoty (PLN). The path is short but uses rocks, steps and bridges — not suitable for strollers, fine for young kids with good shoes. Summer weekends are busy; mornings are quieter. In winter 2026/27 bridges and steps can be icy — microspikes help.
Spring brings fresh green and full cascades after the snowmelt; autumn colors the beech and larch woods and the crowds thin out. Summer is pleasant in the shade of the gorge but busiest. On the slopes you will notice many junipers and lime-loving plants typical of the Pieniny limestone, and a jumble of boulders from a prehistoric landslide in the upper part of the gorge.
Yes — it is the quintessential short Pieniny hike and pairs perfectly with the nearby Biała Woda nature reserve, the Palenica chairlift and the Pieniny Road in Szczawnica.
