Dąbrówka Kościelna, Greater Poland
The Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Dąbrówka Kościelna (roughly "dom-BROOF-kah kosh-CHEL-nah") is a Marian pilgrimage church in the countryside of Greater Poland. It sits on a hill above a small village between Poznań and Gniezno, Poland's first capital. The white church with its green onion-domed tower holds a crowned image of the Virgin. It is a rewarding detour for anyone exploring the Zielonka Forest or following the Piast Trail.
The village lies in Kiszkowo municipality, about 25 km (15 miles) northeast of central Poznań as the crow flies and about 30 km west of Gniezno. Poznań has the nearest international airport and direct rail links to Berlin and Warsaw. From Poznań you continue on country roads, so a car or bike is the practical choice. On the big feast days, expect heavy traffic and crowded parking.
The parish dates back to the 13th century. According to tradition, the cult began in the 17th century, when an image of Mary hanging on an oak beside the church was said to glow day and night. The church on the hill has been lost and rebuilt several times. It was replaced by a larger building in 1726, burned after a lightning strike in 1774, and burned again in 1925, when the original image was destroyed. The present Church of the Assumption, built in a style that echoes the late Baroque, dates from 1930–1936. During World War II the German occupiers cut down the legendary oak. A new tree was planted after the war.
The image you see today is a postwar copy. On June 15, 1969, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, the Primate of Poland and a leading figure of the Church under communism, crowned it with papal crowns before an estimated 30,000 faithful. Thieves tore off the crowns in 1989, and the image was crowned again in 1994.
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes here. Is it worth visiting? If you are interested in Polish Catholic culture, yes. The two main feast days, August 15 and the first Sunday after September 8, draw thousands of pilgrims and show village devotion at its liveliest.
Entry is free (as of October 2026). This is a working parish church, and the interior is reliably open mainly around services. We found no official schedule of opening hours online. Dress modestly and keep quiet during Mass. Do not count on English signage or English-speaking staff.
The village is also a stop on the Greater Poland section of the Way of St. James, the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela.
