Jelenia Góra, Lower Silesian
Jelenia Góra's Market Square (Town Hall Square, Plac Ratuszowy; say "YEH-lehn-yah GOO-rah") is the heart of an old Silesian linen-trading town: a rectangular square lined with arcaded houses, with a Baroque-Classical town hall in the middle and a Neptune fountain beside it. Known in German as Hirschberg, the town is the main gateway to Poland's Giant Mountains (Karkonosze), and its square is the natural place to start exploring.
Jelenia Góra appears in records in 1281, though Polish tradition links its founding to Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth in the early 12th century. Linen made it rich: in 1630 the emperor granted local merchants an exclusive right to trade linen, and grand arcaded houses rose around the square. The present town hall was built in 1744–1749 to a design by Christian Gottlieb Hedemann, replacing an older one demolished in 1739; its clock began ticking in 1750, a tavern in the cellars once earned the town extra income, and the building still houses the city government.
In 1945 the town passed from Germany to Poland. In 1971 most historic houses on the square and Kopernika Street were demolished; only six old facades were kept, and the new buildings of the 1970s imitate the earlier style. So the square looks historic, but many houses are postwar reconstructions in spirit rather than originals.
The square is a public space, free and open around the clock year-round. The town hall is a working city office, not a museum. Prices in cafés and shops are in Polish zloty (PLN).
Jelenia Góra is about 110 km west of Wrocław, 1.5–2 hours by car or direct train; Wrocław airport (WRO) is the nearest major one. From the train station it is about a 20-minute walk to the square, or a short city bus ride. The center has paid parking zones.
Yes, as a base and a pleasant stop rather than a full-day destination. Pair it with the Karkonosze Museum a few minutes away, the spa quarter of Cieplice, or a hike up to Chojnik Castle.
