Beach in Kołobrzeg

Kołobrzeg Beach (roughly "ko-WOB-zheg") is a broad strip of fine, pale sand that runs for several kilometers east from the harbor and lighthouse, past the pier and the leafy spa parks, toward the suburb of Podczele. It is the main reason crowds head to this Baltic resort in summer, yet it is worth a walk in any season: in winter the sand empties out, while the year-round spa town stays busy with visitors taking the sea air.

Where it is

Kołobrzeg sits on Poland's West Pomeranian coast, about 230 km northeast of Berlin and around 100 km from Szczecin-Goleniów Airport. The beach starts right next to the harbor entrance and the spa district, about 20–30 minutes on foot from the train station.

What the beach is like

The city's tourism portal calls it one of the wider beaches on the Baltic, with fine sand and clean water. Its shape owes a lot to coastal engineering: a project completed in 2014 rebuilt the shore defenses along roughly 3 km, adding an underwater sill 100–120 m offshore, a line of groynes and sand nourishment. That is why you will see rows of wooden posts running into the sea.

From west to east, the main stretches are:

• Lighthouse beach, right by the harbor, where you can watch boats come and go;
• Monument and pier section, the busiest, close to hotels and the promenades;
• Kamienny Szaniec further east, quieter and backed by park woodland;
• Podczele and the Eastern Ecopark beyond it, with dunes and forest.

West of the harbor there is a separate west beach, usually less crowded.

Pier, breakwater and promenades

Two walkways follow the shore: Bulwar Jana Szymańskiego from the lighthouse to the pier, and Aleja Nadmorska, a seaside promenade begun in 1884 for spa guests. The R10 cycle route runs parallel. The 220-meter pier charges a small fee from the last Friday of April to the third Sunday of October (9 a.m.–9 p.m.) and is free the rest of the year. The 308-meter east breakwater is the best sunset spot; it charges only in summer and September.

Things to know before you go

• Lifeguarded swimming areas operate only in the summer season; the city council sets the list each year.
• In fall and winter the beach is perfect for long walks, and winter sea swimming is popular. In stormy weather keep off the breakwater and away from the waterline.
• Families with small children will prefer the guarded sections in summer. Strollers and bikes are hard going on sand – stick to the promenade.
• Water temperatures on the Baltic stay cool even in summer, so bring a windbreaker.

Getting there and parking

Trains link Kołobrzeg with several large Polish cities; from the station you can walk to the sea. Drivers will find paid parking zones in the center and near the beach, and spaces run out quickly in July and August.
