Landscape parks
Pilchowice, Lower Silesian
Bóbr Valley Landscape Park (Park Krajobrazowy Doliny Bobru, roughly "PAHRK krah-yo-brah-ZOH-vee doh-LEE-nee BOH-broo") protects the winding valley of the Bóbr River between Jelenia Góra and Lwówek Śląski in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland. The Pilchowice Dam, the town of Wleń, sandstone rocks of the "Lwówek Switzerland" and about 92 km of marked trails make it one of the best things to do for a gentle hiking or cycling weekend, without any high summits. It is a quiet alternative to the busy Karkonosze.
The park lies in the Western Sudetes foothills, close to the Czech border. Its seat is in Jelenia Góra (German: Hirschberg), which has rail and bus links. Wrocław, with an international airport, is the main gateway city; a car is the easiest option, so check rail and bus timetables if you travel without one. Parking is available at the main trailheads, including Pilchowice and Wleń.
The park was established on November 16, 1989 and covers 109.43 square kilometers (about 42 square miles), with a 125.52 km² buffer zone. It spans seven municipalities. Only about 32 percent of the area is forest, so the landscape is open and hilly, and the highest point, Siedlęcinka, reaches just 495 m (1,624 ft). The Bóbr River flows about 38 km through the park, cutting several gorges that expose different rocks.
The park has two nature reserves, Góra Zamkowa (since 1994, protecting oak-hornbeam forest) and Dziki Wąwóz, and two Natura 2000 sites, "Ostoja nad Bobrem" and "Panieńskie Skały". It lies where the Izera Foothills, the Kaczawa Foothills and the Kaczawskie Mountains meet.
The main trail hub is at Pilchowice. The blue E3 long-distance route and the green Piast Castles Trail cross the park, and cyclists can use the ER-6 "Bóbr Valley" route, the Jelenia Góra loop and the Lwówek loop. A lakeside stroll takes 2 to 3 hours, and a full day lets you combine Wleń and the rocks. Trail signs are in Polish; English information may be limited. The Jelenia Góra–Żagań railway (the Bóbr Valley Railway) was built near the dam, but check current train service before you plan a trip.
The park is open year-round, with no gates and no entry fee. Information comes from the Lower Silesian Landscape Parks Complex (ul. Puszczykowska 10, 50-559 Wrocław, tel. +48 71 364 27 58). Prices in Polish zloty (PLN) and opening hours for individual attractions in Jelenia Góra, Wleń and Lubomierz are set by their operators. Is it worth visiting? Yes, if you like river valleys, industrial heritage and quiet trails.
Nearby are the Pilchowice Dam and Wleń Castle.
