Opole
The Museum of the Opole Countryside (Muzeum Wsi Opolskiej) is an open-air museum in Opole's Bierkowice district, about 5 km from the city center. Around 50 wooden buildings brought from villages across the region – farmhouses, granaries, a smithy, an inn, a village school, a water mill, two windmills and a 17th-century church – are set out as farmsteads with gardens and orchards on about 10 hectares. It is one of the region's best family outings, but in the off-season only the grounds are open.
Ethnographer Stanisław Bronicz surveyed about a thousand wooden buildings across the region in 1956–1958 with researchers from Kraków's Jagiellonian University and picked several dozen to relocate. The museum was founded on November 14, 1961 and opened to visitors on September 23, 1970 – the first open-air museum in Silesia. The site, a former military training ground, was reshaped with a 700-meter stream, a water mill, five little bridges and an artificial hill for a windmill.
Look out too for the inn from Przewóz, the thatched barn from Rudziczka (1830) – the largest in the museum – and the granary from Sternalice, the first building moved here in 1965. During the main season, attendants in the buildings explain their history (included in the ticket). On Thursdays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. the museum observes "quiet hours," helpful for visitors sensitive to noise.
Main season (until October 25, 2026): Monday 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., Tuesday–Friday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., weekends 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with a break inside the buildings from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. Tickets 30 PLN, reduced 15 PLN.
Off-season (October 26–December 31, 2026 and January 2–April 10, 2027): daily 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m., except public holidays – grounds only, no interiors; a 5 PLN walking ticket applies.
Admission is free on Mondays all year round. Allow 2–3 hours in season, about an hour for a winter walk. The museum's website has a German-language version.
The museum is at ul. Wrocławska 174, on regional road 414 near national road 45. There is a free car park about 100 meters from the entrance, with disabled spaces. City buses 5 and 9 stop at "Wrocławska-skansen." Opole is about 100 km (an hour) from Wrocław via the A4 motorway.
