Museums
Opole
The Museum of Polish Song in Opole tells the story of Polish popular music from the 1920s to the present – inside the Millennium Amphitheatre, the stage of the National Festival of Polish Song. Instead of display cases you get headphones, touchscreens, recording booths and a wardrobe of costumes, and you decide what to listen to and for how long. It is one of the few institutions in Europe devoted to the history of popular song, and a good plan for a rainy day in Opole.
Opole has hosted the festival since 1963, so it is no coincidence that the city founded a museum of song here in 2007. The multimedia permanent exhibition opened in 2016 in the rebuilt amphitheatre, now the National Centre of Polish Song. That same year the museum won a certificate for the best regional tourist product, followed later by a Polish Tourism Organisation certificate and a Živa Award in the creativity category. In February 2024 singer Natalia Kukulska opened a new section of the permanent exhibition featuring original stage outfits of Polish stars.
You explore with an audio guide and headphones, stopping wherever you like. On offer:
Check the museum's website for the list of closure days before you travel.
Allow 1.5–2 hours – time flies with headphones on. At weekends buy your ticket in advance, as the limit of 65 visitors per hour can run out. The exhibition entrance is on ul. Barlickiego (address: ul. Piastowska 14A). The amphitheatre is a few minutes' walk from the Market Square and the "Opole Venice", so you can easily combine your visit with the Piast Tower and a stroll along the Młynówka canal. Families with teenagers will love the recording booths, older visitors the archive performances from the Opole stage.
