Museums
Szreniawa, Greater Poland
The National Museum of Agriculture in Szreniawa (shreh-NYAH-vah), a village just southwest of Poznań in western Poland, is the country's only agricultural museum of national rank and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Set on a historic country estate beside Wielkopolska National Park, it holds more than 20,000 objects, from wooden plows to steam engines and crop-spraying aircraft, plus a working farm with heritage-breed animals. It is one of the best family days out near Poznań.
The museum opened on August 29, 1964, in the restored manor house of a former landed estate. It became a national museum in 1975 and has carried its current name since 1986. Today it also runs five branch museums in the region, covering hunting and nature, milling, wicker and hops, beekeeping and the meat trade.
The collections are spread across exhibition pavilions, old farm buildings and parkland:
The Neo-Gothic Bierbaum mausoleum tower, built for the estate's former owners, normally doubles as a viewpoint but is closed for renovation (since July 14).
Yes, especially with children, who love the animals and the giant machines. Allow at least 2–3 hours. The manor house can only be visited in groups of up to 20 people, on the hour (10 am–4 pm in season, until 2 pm in winter), and the tour takes about 45 minutes. Guided tours and cooking workshops must be booked ahead, and most guiding is in Polish.
Tickets cost PLN 25 standard, PLN 20 reduced and PLN 50 for a family (two adults with children); a grounds-only ticket (no pavilions, manor house or cowshed) is PLN 7, and children under 7 go free. Admission is free on Saturdays, except on days with ticketed events.
The museum is at Dworcowa 5 in Szreniawa, in the Komorniki district on regional road 311, a short drive from central Poznań, which has an international airport and direct trains from Warsaw and Berlin. A large public car park is about 100 m from the entrance. By train, the Poznań–Wolsztyn line takes about 20 minutes from Poznań Główny to Szreniawa station, 100 m from the museum (on an unpaved path). Suburban bus 703 runs from the Poznań-Górczyn terminus in about 30 minutes; the stop is 500 m away. Cyclists can ride through the forest or along the bike path from Komorniki. Combine your visit with a walk in Wielkopolska National Park or a trip to Rogalin, home of Poland's most famous ancient oaks.
