Lakes
Jeziory, Greater Poland
Lake Góreckie (Jezioro Góreckie, say "yeh-ZHOR-oh goo-RETS-kyeh") is the best-known lake in Wielkopolski National Park, about 15 km south of Poznań in western Poland. Long, L-shaped and ringed by steep wooded banks, it holds two small islands, one of them crowned by the brick ruins of a 19th-century castle. It is the park's most popular walking destination and an easy half-day trip from Poznań by train.
Lake Góreckie fills a trough cut by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age; it is one of three lakes in the same glacial channel. It covers roughly 92–104 hectares (sources differ), stretches 2.55 km long and up to about half a kilometer wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 17.2 m. A shallow sill near Castle Island splits it into a deeper southern basin and a shallower northwestern one. About 60% of the steep shoreline is forested. Scientists have studied the lake since 1928, and since 2009 a wind-powered aerator has been helping oxygenate the water.
The two islands total about 1.9 ha and have very different origins. Castle Island (Wyspa Zamkowa) is a moraine hill, while Kopczysko is a peat island that grew from plant debris piling up on an underwater shoal.
A castle of the powerful Górka family probably stood on Castle Island in the 17th century before being destroyed during the Swedish wars. In 1824–1825, Count Tytus Działyński built a Gothic Revival folly here as a wedding gift for his sister, Klaudyna Potocka. During the revolutions of 1848, Prussian troops wrecked it, suspecting that Polish insurgents were hiding on the island. Early medieval coins and jewelry were later found here. Today the island is a cormorant colony and no trail leads onto it, so you view the ruins from the shore.
Allow one to two hours for a lakeside stroll, or half a day if you walk in from Puszczykówko.
As of October 2026, entry to the national park is free. Visits are allowed year-round from dawn to dusk on marked trails only. Swimming in Lake Góreckie has been banned since 1995; in summer, use the designated beaches on other park lakes such as Jarosławieckie or Chomęcickie. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled. The nearest parking is the paid lot in front of park headquarters in Jeziory (7 PLN for two hours, 12 PLN per day).
By car, take the county road from Komorniki through Jeziory to Puszczykowo. By train, ride a regional service from Poznań toward Wrocław to Puszczykówko, then walk along ul. Dworcowa toward Jeziory and pick up the red trail.
In winter 2026/27, the frozen lake is beautiful but walking on the ice is prohibited and dangerous. Steep lakeside paths can be icy, so wear boots with good grip. The museum is open on weekdays only in winter.
