Porcelain Museum in Wałbrzych

The Porcelain Museum in Wałbrzych (roughly "VAH-wb-zhikh") is a small but rewarding museum in Lower Silesia, southwest Poland. Set in the neoclassical Alberti Palace in the city center, it displays more than 10,000 pieces of Silesian and European porcelain in rooms styled as an elegant bourgeois home. It tells a surprising story: a town known for coal mining was also a major porcelain-making center before 1945, when it was the German city of Waldenburg.

History

The museum was founded in 1908 by a local antiquarian society. In 1926 it became the town's Heimatmuseum and moved into the Alberti Palace on ul. 1 Maja, a grand townhouse from around 1800. After World War II, when Wałbrzych became part of Poland, the collections were secured and the museum reopened in 1947. Since a 2015 renovation it has focused on porcelain. Its total holdings exceed 35,000 objects.

What to see

The core of the display is porcelain from factories in and around Wałbrzych – the town was home to well-known manufacturers such as Krister and Tielsch – alongside pieces from Germany, Austria, Czechia, Russia, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and England. Look out for:

• full dinner services laid out on dining tables;
• figurines and sculptural groups, such as a white porcelain hunting scene with dogs;
• Polish everyday ceramics from the 1950s and 1960s;
• period furniture and paintings.

The museum also owns contemporary Polish paintings, including works by Zdzisław Beksiński, Jerzy Duda-Gracz and Franciszek Starowieyski. From late September 2026 a temporary exhibition shows acquisitions from the past decade.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are already in the area for Książ Castle, yes: it adds a different side of local history. Allow 60–90 minutes. An audio guide is included in the ticket price, which helps since labels are mainly in Polish. Families get a discounted family ticket. If you use a wheelchair, call ahead: the website does not describe step-free access to the historic building. Mondays are free but the museum opens only at noon.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026, per the official website:

• Monday: noon–4 p.m. – free admission (audio guide 10 PLN);
• Tuesday–Sunday: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Tickets cost 35 PLN (standard) and 27 PLN (reduced); a family ticket is 27 PLN per person for families of three to six with at least one child aged 7–16. The museum is part of the Explore Wałbrzych combo ticket (139 PLN / 109 PLN) with Książ Castle and the Old Mine, which must be booked in advance by phone or email. Getting there and nearby

Wałbrzych is about 70 km southwest of Wrocław, the nearest airport and major city. The museum is in the center at ul. 1 Maja 9, a short walk from the Market Square. Nearby are the Lutheran Church of the Savior by Carl Gotthard Langhans (architect of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate), the Old Mine science center, and, a short drive north, Książ Castle and its palm house.
