Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Wałbrzych

The Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Wałbrzych occupies the town’s oldest church, on Garbarska Street. The small building has a history reaching back to medieval traditions, while its most valuable treasure is a Gothic Pietà venerated as the patron figure of Wałbrzych. Wałbrzych’s oldest church

Tradition connects the cult with a wooden church mentioned in 1305. The present building is the result of later alterations: Gothic elements meet Baroque furnishings from 1714–1718. Because the church is small, the architectural details, altars and atmosphere of the shrine deserve close attention.

The Pietà and the town’s patron

The focus of devotion is a 15th-century Pietà showing Mary holding Christ’s body. The figure is venerated as Our Lady of Sorrows, patron of Wałbrzych. See it as part of a living shrine rather than as an isolated exhibit: the church remains a place of prayer, adoration and services.
