Collegiate Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Wałbrzych

The Collegiate Church of the Holy Guardian Angels in Wałbrzych is a distinctive Neo-Gothic church in the city centre. Construction of the present building began in 1898 to a design by Alexis Langer, an important Neo-Gothic architect in Silesia. The church responded to the growth of industrial Wałbrzych and its population, and remains both an active place of worship and a historic landmark.

Architecture and interior

The building stands out through its soaring silhouette, brick elevations, substantial buttresses and tall windows. Inside are Renaissance tomb slabs and epitaphs of former townspeople, including members of the Czettritz family. Notice the proportions of the interior, the Neo-Gothic details and the organ, which forms part of the collegiate church’s musical history.

From parish to collegiate church

The church occupies the site of an earlier St Michael the Archangel church with medieval roots. After the Świdnica diocese was created, Wałbrzych was considered as a possible episcopal seat, but Świdnica was ultimately chosen. In 2010 the church received collegiate status and a chapter of canons was established here.

Practical information

The collegiate church is in central Wałbrzych, within walking distance of the railway station and Magistracki Square. It is an active church, so sightseeing must fit around Masses, services and ceremonies; check parish notices before planning a visit. Stara Kopalnia, the city’s industrial heritage site, makes a useful companion attraction.
