Guardian Angels Church in Wałbrzych

The Guardian Angels Church in Wałbrzych (say "VAHW-bzhikh"), formally the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Holy Guardian Angels, is the main Catholic church of this former coal-mining city in Lower Silesia, southwest Poland. Its red-brick Neo-Gothic bulk and needle-like spire dominate the downtown skyline. Designed by Alexis Langer and completed in 1904, it is worth a stop for its soaring interior, Renaissance relics from an older church and a large three-manual organ.

A short history

A church has stood here since at least 1428, when the site was occupied by St. Michael the Archangel's church. By the late 19th century Wałbrzych, then the German town of Waldenburg, was growing fast on the back of coal mining, and the old building was too small. Parish priest Paul Ganse, who served from 1896 to 1928, set up a church-building association, and funding came from parishioners, the Princes of Pless and of Żmigród, and Archbishop Georg Kopp of Breslau (Wrocław). Construction ran from 1898 to 1904, and Cardinal Kopp consecrated the church in May 1904.

The spire has its own story. In 1995 it was taken down because it was leaning about 1.5 m (5 ft) off vertical and risked collapse; it was rebuilt on a steel frame by 2003. The church was named a Jubilee church in 2000 and became a collegiate church on May 3, 2010.

What to see

The building is roughly 60 m long, 30 m wide and 22 m high (about 200 by 100 by 72 feet). It is a brick hall church on a Latin-cross plan, partly inspired by the Holy Cross Collegiate Church in Wrocław. Outside, look for the tower above the main entrance, the buttresses and the gilded leaf frieze that runs around the walls.

Inside, the highlights are:

• a three-aisled hall with net vaulting and stained-glass windows about 12 m (40 ft) tall
• a triptych high altar
• the pulpit and a Renaissance baptismal font brought over from the earlier church
• 16th- to 18th-century stone epitaphs in the south wall, including a knight in armor and the sisters Jadwiga and Urszula of the local Czettritz family
• an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa donated in 1946 by Poles as thanks for surviving the war
• the organ on the west gallery, with 46 stops, 2,924 pipes and three manuals

Visiting tips

This is a working parish church, not a museum, and no sightseeing hours are published. The best time to look inside is just before or after Mass. Keep quiet and avoid photographing worshippers. Expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes. Entry is free, although access between services is not guaranteed. • Getting there: Wałbrzych is roughly 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Wrocław, the nearest major city and airport. Trains run from Wrocław to Wałbrzych, and the church is a short walk from the Market Square.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are in Wałbrzych for Książ Castle or the Old Mine (Stara Kopalnia) science and art center, yes: it adds a half-hour of impressive late Neo-Gothic architecture right in the center. About 150 m away, on Plac Kościelny, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows, rebuilt in 1718, has a fine Baroque altar and a pilgrimage tradition the parish traces back to 1191.
