Pyzdry, Greater Poland
On a concrete fence by the marina in Pyzdry, men are still bathing in the Warta, washerwomen are rinsing laundry, and a group of women is crossing a bridge that disappeared long ago. This large-format mural from 2021 turns old photographs of the town into a painting. It covers about 121 m² and is the easiest way to see what life on the river looked like more than a century ago.
The mural was painted by the Murall Art Group from Poznań, which works with the municipality. The starting point was archive photographs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries documenting Pyzdry's not-so-distant past. The fence shows work, daily life, leisure and unusual events by the Warta: men bathing, washerwomen, children and canoeists. The centrepiece is the long-gone wooden bridge over the Warta, with the other scenes arranged around it.
The mural is public art, free and open at all times. 10–15 minutes is enough; walk along the fence and read the scenes like frames in an album. It fits best into a riverside walk: from the market square, past the former Franciscan friary, down the mosaic steps on Nadrzeczna Street to the marina. Pyzdry also has a second, much larger mural with the town's history on the wall of the sports and events hall, visible as you drive in over the bridge. Together they make a good introduction before visiting the Pyzdry Land Museum.
