Borzykowo, Greater Poland
In the fields near Borzykowo stand striped border posts and wooden sentry boxes with carved guards – a reconstructed crossing on the line that for more than a century split the Greater Poland region between Prussia and Russia. Drawn after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, when partitioned Poland was divided among its neighbours, the border ran here until Poland regained independence. Today it is easiest to see not from the ground but from above, in the pattern of the fields that changes exactly where the frontier once ran.
The information board at the reconstruction puts it simply: 103 years of the border left a lasting mark on the size and shape of the fields. On the former Prussian side large, compact plots dominate, while on the Russian side the land is cut into long, narrow strips. The difference comes from the different ways the two states consolidated and surveyed farmland, and it still shows clearly on satellite images. Local descriptions also stress that the Russian Empire reached unusually far west in this area.
Locals see the site as Borzykowo's calling card and use it as a meeting place. The village development strategy describes it as an open-air reconstruction on the former border between the Russian and German empires.
This is a 15–30 minute stop, not a museum with tickets and opening hours. It works best by bike: the path along the old border lets you ride a stretch of the line that separated two worlds for a century. Do not walk into cultivated fields looking for traces of the border – open a satellite map on your phone while standing at the reconstruction instead. Borzykowo is in the Kołaczkowo district of Września County, and afterwards it is worth driving on to Pyzdry on the Warta, with its arcaded house and former Franciscan friary.
