Legendia – Silesian Amusement Park

In 1970 the Silesian Amusement Park welcomed 2 million visitors — a record that says a lot about what this funfair meant to Upper Silesia. Opened in 1959 in Silesian Park in Chorzów, it is the oldest amusement park in Poland. Since 2017 it has operated as Legendia, with themed zones, the Lech Coaster and family rides that have won European awards.

History: a funfair on mining land

Construction began in 1956 to a design by W. Niemirski. Work proceeded in stages, because the builders had to wait for ground disturbed by coal mining to settle. The first 25 rides were installed in 1958–1960, and the first guests were let in on 12 September 1959. Over time more attractions were added, eventually reaching 50. In 1985 the Gwiazda Duża Ferris wheel was erected; today it is called Legendia Flower and stands about 40 m tall.

In 2015 the park was taken over by the Slovak group Tatry Mountain Resorts, owner of the Tatralandia water park among others, with a planned investment of PLN 117 million. Two years later, after a thorough renovation and new theming, the funfair was renamed Legendia Śląskie Wesołe Miasteczko.

What to see

In 2025 the park had 43 attractions for adults and children, divided into five themed zones: Magical Village, Magical Forest, Valley of Dreams, Magical Mountains and Adventures Valley. The park covers about 26 ha around Koźlok pond, so there is plenty of walking between rides.

• Lech Coaster — a 40 m steel roller coaster, opened on 1 July 2017 as the tallest, fastest and longest in Poland at the time.
• Diabelska Pętla (Devil's Loop) — the former Tornado coaster, refurbished over the winter of 2018/2019.
• Bazyliszek (Basilisk) — an interactive dark ride covering 1,000 m², winner of the European Star Award 2018 and a Thea Award, among others.
• Dolina Jagi (Baba Yaga's Valley) — a raft ride opened in June 2020, placed third in the European Star Award 2020.
• Diamond River, plus carousels, shooting galleries and mini racetracks for the youngest.

Did you know?

In 2013 the park bought 26 second-hand rides from Denmark's Sommerland Syd. Not every investment worked out: the Silesia Tower of 2008, about 50 m high and the first of its kind in Poland, was barred from further operation by the Office of Technical Inspection as early as 2009. Of the eight roller coasters built in the park's history, five had been removed by 2025.

Set aside a whole day and arrive at opening time — at weekends and in the summer holidays the most popular rides have long queues. The summer season usually runs from spring to autumn, and outside it the park holds events such as Halloween at Legendia and Winter Legendia; check current hours and ticket prices at legendia.pl. Look through the special offers on the park's website before buying, and for visitors who will not use the rides there is a walking ticket. The Silesian Planetarium, the zoo and the Silesian Stadium are in the same Silesian Park, making it easy to plan a whole weekend.
