Penance Cross in Rudyszwałd

On Zabełkowska Street in Rudyszwałd, set against the wall of a roadside building, stands a short, stocky sandstone cross. It bears no name and no date, yet it is one of the oldest monuments in the village: a stone trace of medieval law, under which a killer could atone for his crime by erecting a cross where it happened.

A stone meant to end a feud

Penance crosses, also called reconciliation crosses, are generally dated to the 14th–16th centuries. They were put up by the person responsible for a killing as penance and atonement, usually at the scene of the crime. The cross was both a public admission of guilt and an invitation to passers-by to pray for the dead. The particular story behind the Rudyszwałd cross has not survived.

What you can see

The cross has the shape of a Latin cross and measures roughly 75 × 75 × 20 cm; it is cracked at the base. According to a survey of the region's penance crosses published in 2010, it originally stood in the middle of a crossroads and was later moved to its present spot. Look for the vertical groove cut into the stone. Its origin is unexplained, and such marks on penance crosses are often linked to old beliefs: sharpening a sword, or scraping off stone dust that was believed to be magical. A small plaque next to the cross states that it is a protected monument.

A village on the Czech border

Rudyszwałd lies in the Krzyżanowice municipality in Racibórz County, in the middle of the Moravian Gate, right on the border with the Czech Republic. The village was first recorded around 1305 in the Latin book of endowments of the Wrocław bishopric. The Bełk stream runs through it and joins the Oder a short distance away.

The cross stands by the road and can be seen free of charge at any time; 10 minutes is enough. The easiest landmark is the Arnold guesthouse on Zabełkowska Street, almost on the boundary with Zabełków. You can also come by train: the village has a stop with connections to Racibórz, Wodzisław Śląski and Bohumín across the Czech border, so the cross fits easily into a trip around the border municipality of Krzyżanowice.
