Penitential Cross in Rudyszwałd

At the crossing of Zabełkowska and Wiejska streets in Rudyszwałd, right by the border with Zabełków, stands a stone penitential cross — a monument to an old practice that today is recalled mainly by such stones. The exact year of its creation is unknown; scholars assume the broad period of the 14th–16th centuries, when crosses of this type were erected.

A punishment written in stone

Penitential crosses were erected as a punishment and penance for committing a crime — raising the stone also meant a public admission of killing. The story that led to the erection of the Rudyszwałd cross has not survived in written accounts, which makes it a silent witness to medieval law.

Where to find it

The cross stands by the road from Chałupki to Krzyżanowice, next to the Arnold guesthouse, almost on the border of Zabełków and Rudyszwałd — a village in the commune of Krzyżanowice, Racibórz county, in the middle of the Moravian Gate, right by the Czech border. The Bełk stream crosses the area, flowing into the Oder nearby.

The monument can be viewed free of charge at any time of day and year — it is a stop on a tour of the Krzyżanowice commune rather than a ticketed site. Combine your visit with nearby attractions: the viewing tower over the meanders of the Oder in Zabełków or the Black Elm Open-Air Museum in Roszków.
